It is now 10th week. As finals quickly approach, so does the Irvine Invite, which is to be held on March 25th and 26th. It is the weekend after finals, the end of winter quarter, the beginning of spring break. With that in mind, it is now crunch time. For some, it means it is time to start cramming and studying. As for this team, it means that preparations have to begin for the tournament.
Today the team met at 6pm in the ARC team room to assign jobs for the tournament. Alpha has to head the tourney as the Tournament Director. Job heads are as follows...
Costco - Box, Max, Danny, Steve, Iris(?)... whoever wants it
-Task: In charge of ordering bagels on Wednesday and for pickup on friday, pickup of party supplies, buying bananas on Wednesday so they have time to ripen, purchasing, etc.
Field Setup - Box, SkinE, and everyone else
-Task: Getting to the fields at 7:00am and coordinating setup of fields, frisbee central, waiver table.
Party - Matt, Jenn, SkinE (for planning), Raph... so far...
-Task: During the All-Star game, this team must go and pick up the pizza and other food for on-field party
Once the team meeting was over, Allen had a separate meeting with the women to discuss the specific needs of their team. Most likely, it was to discuss things like their participation in the invite, in sectionals, and other co-ed tournaments.
Practice continued as normal except with limited time conditions. After warm-ups and stretches, conditioning began with a couple rounds of work-rest-play. After that, the team went straight into practicing the 3-3-1 force sideline zone. Unfortunately, it seemed like it did not go as smoothly as it had last monday. However, it may be due to having more experienced handlers. Today was a full team practice since there were not enough people to switch into two teams.
During Practice
Dark:
Cup - Danny, Box, Steve
Wings - Guy, Sam
Short Deep - Alpha
Light:
Handlers - KG, Scott, Max
Poppers - Jerry, Raph
Deeps - No Deeps
During practice, the handlers did a great job of swinging and breaking the mark even with the mark blocking off the dump. Raph and Jerry did a great job as well crashing the cup. The offense did a lot better at breaking this zone than last Monday.
During Scrimmage
Dark:
Allen, Danny, Box, Sam, Guy, Alpha, Jenn, Iris, James, Mark,
Light:
Scott, KG, Max, Matt, Raph, Grad Mike, Thomas, Kim, Steve
Highlights:
-The breakdown of the Cumbre connection between Scott and KG. It's not a highlight, but it was hilarious to watch specific match-ups geared to shutdown that connection. Scott's lack of play for the past few weeks did not help either.
-Thomas used his long arms to his advantage and had some great D's against Alpha as well as some hot grabs for scores.
-Matt macked the disc three different times against Allen. Each time, Allen was able to still grab it, one which he had to layout for, another which was a hammer for the score. Where was Matt's mojo today?
-Light team celebration: scorer bowls a disc at teammates; and 7 man line leg wave
-Best highlight: Iris's huge layout bid in the in-zone. Although she missed it, she was 3-feet off the ground and came out unscathed.
Overall it was more of a fun day at ultimate. No separate teams, just some fun before finals. Team dinner was at In-and-Out/KFC.
