3/15/2008-3/16/2008 - Long Beach's "Best Tournament of Your Life" (or BTOYL)

This was a B-team tournament. We went as Irvine-B, which was really about 8 rookies and 8 vets. We placed some general guidelines on the vets. Example of some:
1. Vets cannot pick up the disc (off a turn).
2. Vets should not handle (though usually one was back there in case of emergencies)
3. Vets could not throw upline (which was rescinded later because people stopped cutting once they saw one of them catch it. Then again, the other rookies should have recognized to just grab the dishy as fast as they could.)

Lots of good stuff happened in this tournament. Comprehensive tournament write-ups aren't my style. But I did send out an email of my highlights of the rookies.

My email:

Hey Nightlife,

I just wanted to thank you all of you for an awesome tournament. I hope you all enjoyed it. I'm definitely did. I was so impressed with all of you guys, and how you all stepped up your game.

Phil - Against Whittier, you clobbered two huge guys as our deep-deep. Against Long Beach, you defended against their greatest deep threat, Jake (Frankenstein guy) at least twice. On offense, a deep monster. Best grab was the one against CSULB when you grabbed in between Will and one other LB defender.

Stig - Solid, consistent, and reliable play as usual. You play your role as a cutter is as good as me, if not better. And even through the exhaustion, you were able to pull out clutch plays, like skying two Long Beach defenders and Roeder. Oh yea, and all those garbage pickup too. That was cool.

Sherlock - Huge layout D's. You probably have the most on the team, vets and rookies alike. Played a great game both as a handler and as a defender.

Peter - Playing through a swollen knee, a disc macked into your face, and numerous cuts and bruises, I hope someone took a picture of you with all that blood on your shirt, because that shows how much you wanted to give to this team. It was so awesome to see you as a primary handler.

Thunder - I know its been a hard road, but I hope you recognize how much you have improved. On D, I definitely remember you sticking with the disc and defending several 2nd chance plays. Garbage pickup on defense.

Yang - Probably had the toughest time out there. But throughout it all, you kept your spirits and never let it get you down. If anything, I hope you had a good time and learned something. Yea... you didn't come on Saturday so I really don't know what to say about you? =P

I'm so proud of all you and how well we did. Rookie handler lines, our first bagel (against Whittier), and an amazing comeback from a 5-1 deficit against UCLA (A/B) line. Plus our 5-0 run against them to win it, 12-10. Seraph, Sultan, Banshee (Jason), Dr. Jones, Ratchet, Disco Stu... all A-teamers now or at one point, plus Yoda who is the B-team captain.

I know it ended on a sour note with a loss to CSULB. And there are many excuses we could use... the loss of Jerry, Allen, Khosh and Peter, the additional game we had to play, etc. We were all tired out there. Allen said, "if you're tired then you need more track workouts." As that is probably true, I know it also means that ALL of you left EVERYTHING out on that field, and that makes me happy. I'm confident that everyone learned something this weekend. Rest up and have a great spring break. See you all in two weeks.

Steven

PS. Videos should be up by tomorrow to distract you from studying. HAHAHA
