Here is another 3-day tournament including teams from all over the country. Lucky for us, this is a measley hour drive compared to those who had to fly over from Boston and such. The unfortunate part was that we had to commute back-and-forth for this tournament. Sam, Jerry, and I took the majority of the team up and down to San Diego both days. Yes, the previous weekend's Vegas tournament had taken its toll and left us with a team that could fit into 3 compact cars. Actually we had more, but some were already down there, visiting with friends and such.
Day 1 - Saturday
Arkansas 13 - Irvine 8
-Arkansas had a small line. There offense was very chill and very efficient. There defense was not as strong, but we did not capitalize on that. Throws were very messy. Cuts were very slow. Decisions were hasty and forced. They had some very high level players. Even with our full line, it would still be a tough game.
Claremont 13 - Irvine 6
-Claremont had a large line and an abundance of tall players. They ability as a team was not actually that much different than ours, but the talent and athletism they had on the field was much higher. They are definitely better than Arkansas, but I feel that Arkansas is doing much more with what they have than Claremont. On the other hand they did beat Arkansas 13-5.
Irvine 11 - Cal Poly Pomona 9
-This game should not have been as close as it was. Pomona has gotten better fairly quickly. They had Simon, a defensive specialist for Monster, but they also had two girls. If stats were taken, this game would have had the most turns. Many turns, many drops, many throwaways made it the close game that it was.
Arizona 13 - Irvine 5
-The challenge of Arizona made us try harder. Being demoralized by the last game gave us a slow start. But midway through, we traded points and busted through some tough zone with tough wind. Overall, we were happy that we were able to work through Arizona's tough defense, and we were able to slow their strong offense. We only had one break, but things were looking up after this game.
Day 2 - Sunday
Irvine 13 - Embry-Riddle-Prescott 4
-I think we were okay with this game. The offnese was sloppy but worked. Our defense started off bad, but I'm glad our ability to adapt finally showed. We let them score early on, but quickly figured out what we were doing wrong and prevented them from scoring anymore after half.
Irvine 13 - UCSD-B 8
-Fun and spirited game. UCSD got their points because they picked up their garbage. They did not really have the handlers, but they had the spirit and the energy to pick up the second chances and garbage throws. There were a few errant throws, but our play was relatively good this game.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 13 - Irvine 8
-SLO Core is a very solid team and earned this win. Our main problem was running our zone offense through their 4-man cup upwind. The wind was a much bigger hinderance for us than it was for them. Seeing as our missing players are our key handlers in zone, I am still not worried that we will be able to take them once our teammates are healthy.
Irvine 13 - Boston University 11
-Not a very great team. A majority of the scores were made by our freshmen. Actually the first 5 scores were all assists by Allen to the following: Two scores to Sherlock, two scores to Stig, and one score to Phil. Boston had a lot of turns due to dropped throws. They had a few good players, but really, they were unimpressive. It was a lot of fun to watch our rookies play this game out, which is the reason why the score was so close.
Day 3 - Monday
...Due to casualties, Irvine was unable to play the third day.
The video came out kind of sloppy. My video camera head was dirty so some of the video did not come out. I might come out with a highlight video later, but I'll put the links up instead of embedding the raw video here.

Overall, saturday was bad and sluggish. Sunday was better. Maybe it is just because we won, but it was nicer to just relax a bit more on sunday and just beat teams like we do. Hopefully we'll be able to recover and start practicing soon, but really it looks like we're not going to have enough to practice since we don't even have enough to play savage right now.
